During debugging this afternoon, doing a Fn+Home or Fn+End to adjust the display brightness caused the ThinkPad W520 to hang. I had to power cycle to resolve.
One of the notes I found [SOLVED] Brightness Adjust Does Not Work says to add the nvidia-specific EnableBrightnessControl=1 option in xorg.conf .
I have found that once I updated the BIOS on my W520, the problem is not occurring right now on my Quantal Quetzal install.
